Government Adopts Programme of Duty-Free Shops Transformation

The government adopted Thursday a programme for a phased transformation of duty-free shops to bring them on an equal basis in terms of taxation with other shops by 1 January 2003 when Slovenia is expected to join the European Union. Under the programme, human resource allocation and job creation projects are to be formulated to prevent the drop in employment in the regions where shops will find it extremely hard to continue business after the duty-free element is eliminated, Andrej Engelman, deputy director of the government service for European affairs.
