Slovenia and the Vatican

The Slovenes will welcome the Holy Father on their soil for a third time in history when Pope John Paul II visits Slovenia on 19 September. As early as 1782 Pope Pius VI visited this part of the world on his way to Vienna, while the present Pope paid his first state and pastoral visit to Slovenia in May 1996. This time John Paul II will be visiting the country to beatify Slovene Bishop Anton Martin Slomsek during a High Mass at Betnava Castle near Maribor, but he will be also meeting President Milan Kucan.
