Pope John Paul II celebrated morning mass in front of about 160,000 followers and high Church and State officials at Betnava Castle in Maribor, where he proclaimed Bishop Anton Martin Slomsek (1800-1862) for beatification. September 24, the day of Slomsek's death, will from now on be celebrated as his name day. This is Pope John Paul II's second visit to Slovenia, his first being May 1996.
