Slovene Public Supports NATO Membership, But Not Duties Resulting from It

Ljubljana, 22 September - The majority of the Slovene public support Slovenia's integration into NATO, but believe that this issue should be decided upon in a referendum. However, a great deal of defiance was noticed when some duties that Slovenia would have to assume as a NATO member are concerned; the public is strongly against a deployment of nuclear weapons and NATO forces in Slovenia, an increase in defense expenses and military exercises in Slovenia, according to the results of the third opinion poll on Slovenia's national security conducted by the defence research centre at Ljubljana's Faculty of Social Sciences as part of the project "the Security Integration in Europe".
