Slovenia has recorded a great rise in its maternal mortality rate in the period following the fall of communism. The mortality rate was 13.4 per 100,000 births in 1980, varied between 4.3 to 10.3 in the following years, and jumped to 26.6 deaths per 100,000 births in 1996.
