Elites in CEE Face Growing Pressure from the EU and International Corporations

Political and economic elites in Central and East European countries are the major factor in political stability, democratic consolidation, and further social and economic reforms, which are principal conditions for the accession of those countries to the European Union. Elites are acting in the face of strong pressures from "below" in the form of sub-elites and mass populations and from "above" in the form of various supranational bodies, especially the EU and international financial institutions, established participants in an international conference on national and trans-national elite integration in European countries, which wound up in Ljubljana on Wednesday.
