Parliamentary Speakers: EU Candidates Should Be Admitted in 2003
Brussels, 1 December - Those EU candidates that turn out to be prepared for full membership should be fully admitted to the 15-nation bloc from 1 January 2003. In this way, the citizens of those newly-admitted members would be able to vote in the next EU parliamentary election scheduled for June 2004. This was backed by the parliamentary speakers from 12 EU candidates, including Slovenia's Janez Podobnik, and President of the European Parliament Nicole Fontaine in a final statement adopted at the conclusion of a two-day meeting which wound up on Wednesday in Brussels.
