Suklje: Public Commitment to Democracy was Critical for Slovenia Ten Years Ago

The resolve of the Slovene public to support a policy committed to preventing the occupation of Slovenia with all means possible and determined not to give in to external pressures was the vital element in gaining national independence. Elsewhere in Yugoslavia this resolution came much later and at a far higher price, Slovenia's Interior Minister Boris Suklje said at the academy marking the tenth anniversary of the Sever (North) campaign the aim of which was to prevent "the rally of truth" which sought to stop democratic changes in Slovenia in late 1980s.
