Slovene Culture - 1999 in Review
Ljubljana, 8 December - This year has marked an increase in financial support for Slovene cultural activity, thus lowering the number of squabbles occurring as a result of insufficient funding. The Ministry of Culture continued its efforts to bring national cultural legislation into line with EU standards, but problems were encountered relating to denationalisation and ownership of cultural property. Another issue that has yet to be addressed adequately is decentralisation, or the transfer of funds from the government to local municipalities in order to finance public institutions. On a positive note, several Slovene artists and performers gained international recognition.
