Nedelo: Enthusiasm for EU Accession Wanes after 1994
Ljubljana, 12 December - PRESS/OPINION/POLL/EU
Since 1994 the enthusiasm for EU accession has waned in Slovenia, shows an opinion poll published in Nedelo, the Sunday issue of the Slovene daily Delo. Over 75 percent of the respondents were in favour of EU membership in 1994, whereas the published opinion poll shows that now only some 57 percent of the respondents support EU accession and 20 percent oppose it. Slovenia is sluggish in harmonising with the EU, say 40 percent of those polled. Most expect problems in agriculture, only 20 percent are still afraid that foreigners would buy up Slovene land, and 25 percent expect that EU membership would bring a higher standard of living and economic growth to Slovenia.
