Appointment as the UN Assistant Secretary General Is a Great Recognition, Says Tuerk

UN Secretary General Spokesman on Thursday's press conference in New York confirmed the decision of the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who appointed the Slovene Ambassador to the UN, Danilo Tuerk, the Assistant Secretary General for political issues. That is the highest position in the hierarchy of the world organisation ever occupied by a Slovene diplomat. Tuerk told STA that he accepted the nomination and will start serving the two-year term in February. Tuerk will replace Alvar de Sota of Peru, who is currently acting as the Assistant Secretary General for political issues.
