Illegal Activities Equal a Whole Percent of GDP

The National Statistical Office on Friday presented the results of two interesting studies; the first covered movements in industrial output and structural changes between 1990 and 1999, while the second covered the black market in Slovenia. The study showed that the volume of illegal activity in 1998 amounted to SIT 31 billion (euro 157 million), which represents one percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). The director of the Statistical Office, Tomaz Banovec, also introduced the book 'Facts in Numbers' which Slovenia released in accordance with the European statistical office, Eurostat, and is the only transition economy to do so.
