Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek traveled to Malta at the right time. Malta began to negotiate formally for EU membership in mid-February. It falls in the second, so called Helsinki group of candidate countries, and is a favourite among them. The problem of the Mediterranean country is its internal political separation. Slovenia would probably find the experience of other candidates more useful and reliable, and it has show that the most important trump card for Brussels is the internal political consensus. However, Malta is not a problematic candidate with an efficient administration, thus there are enough reasons for Slovenia to look that way, writes the Tuesday release of Delo.
