Yugoslav Democratisation - A Condition for Stabile SE Europe

The issue of minorities and inter-ethnic relations in countries of SE Europe is current and European practice weighs heavily on equality of protection offered to minorities, said Slovene Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel on Thursday, in one of the opening addresses made at the two-day conference on inter-ethnic relations and national minorities in SE Europe. The least that could be done for the protection of minorities of the region, is the passing of an international convention on human rights and the rights of minorities, added Rupel. Rupel also met with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Walter Schwimmer in Portoroz. Schwimmer is participating in the conference and is on a two-day official visit to Slovenia. The pair discussed conditions in the Balkans and stressed that the process of Yugoslav democratisation must continue. They assigned an important role for this on Montenegro.
