MP's Call for Extension of Duty-Free Shops' Transformation Deadline

Ljubljana, 12 May - PARLIAMENT/DUTY/FREE/SHOPS
The government should try to ask for extension of the deadline set by the EU for transforming Slovenia's duty-free shops at its road border crossings, the parliamentary economics committee suggested today. The committee took the decision amid public discussion about possible negative economic consequences of the transformation, mainly balance of payments problems. While the EU's deadline was the middle of 2000, the Slovene government committed itself to transform duty-free shops at Slovene border crossings, except with Croatia, as of 1 January 2001.
