Dnevnik Comments Gov't Proposal for Election System

Ljubljana, 7 July - Two basic interests are currently dividing parliament and with that the whole Slovene political scene. To simplify: the left half of parliament would like to see the elections take place as soon as possible, while on the other side the right parties hope and wish that the mandate of the interim government would last as long as possible. The longer they are in power, the more they can show to persuade potential voters. They can also do more to shape a structure which would remain in the future irrespective of a change of government following the elections. That is the way that the government's latest move to send a proposal for the election system to parliament can be understood. The new proposal would mean new debates, the subsequent waiting and an eventual agreement between the parties, while it would also mean direct pressure on the President of Slovenia as he is obliged to decide on the day of the elections, the daily Dnevnik comments in Friday's issue.
