Record Number of Illegal Immigrants This Year
Ljubljana, 14 November - Over 27,000 illegal migrants crossed the Slovene border in the first nine months of this year, an increase of 69 percent over the same period last year. The number of illegal immigrants increased drastically in the second half of 2000, with over 4,200 migrants crossing the border illegally in September and almost 4,900 in October. The Slovene government has adopted changes of the asylum act and proclaimed neighbouring Croatia a country of the third security degree in order to prevent further abuse of the asylum process, Slovene Interior Minister Peter Jambrek told a press conference on Tuesday.
