Review of Events Involving Slovenia in the Week from 9 to 15 December
Ljubljana, 16 December - Slovenia and Yugoslavia were in the headlines this week, as the two countries put an end to a decade of official silence with the establishment of diplomatic relations on Saturday 9 December. Slovene Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel and his Yugoslav counterpart Goran Svilanovic signed the agreement on the establishment of ties, which was hailed by both sides as a foundation for further development in economic relations and as a step towards the resolution of the succession issue. Unfortunately this did not answer how former Yugoslav gold held at a bank in Basel will be distributed, as the governors of five central banks from former Yugoslav states could not agree on a common distribution plan at a meeting in Belgrade.
