Weekly Review of Events involving Slovenia in the Week from 27 January to 2 February

Ljubljana, 3 February - Last week Slovenia hosted the Speaker of the Russian State Duma Genady Seleznyov, the highest Russian official to ever visit Slovenia. NATO Political Director Assistant, Michael D. Higgins and the high representative for Bosnia Wolfgang Petritsch also paid a visit to Slovenia. Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek attended the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he met with Yugoslav and Croatian Presidents, Vojislav Kostunica and Stipe Mesic.

Last week the representative of the Croatian savers of the former branch of the Ljubljanska banka (LB) in Zagreb Bozidar Vukasovic said that he called upon the European Commission to help solve the issue of the LB debt, which in his opinion should not be discussed as part of succession issues. This move triggered an intense exchange between Ljubljana and Brussels.

The Coalition Slovenia fulfilled its threat in withdrawing all MPs from leading positions in Parliament after the ruling coalition failed to support the proposal of the opposition parties which would give them the majority of seats in two supervisory bodies.
