Delo Questions EU's Policies Towards Foot-and-Mouth Outbreak

Ljubljana, 24 March - In the same manner that an owner of a respected restaurant must ensure that the meals are being served before the guests get bored, the host of the Stockholm Summit - Swedish Prime Minister Goeran Persson - did everything to prevent foot-and-mouth from spoiling the planned menu of debates at the latest EU summit. They took care of the burning issue quickly, even as the disease spreading rapidly on the British isles. The crisis is becoming tragicomic. The EU said "no" to preventive vaccination a decade ago, as that meant a saving of some 1 billion euros, while at the same time they exported animals, which they themselves would not purchase. At least the wolf was sated, even if the goat was not perfect, well all until foot-and-mouth unexpectedly broke out on the Island, writes the daily Delo on Saturday.
