EU Should Set Enlargement Date by End of Year, Says Slovene FM Rupel

Prague, 23 May - The EU should set a clear date for enlargement at the June summit in Gothenburg or at least at the December summit in Belgium's Laeken, Slovene Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel said at a meeting with five other foreign ministers from the Luxembourg group of EU candidate countries in Prague on Wednesday. Rupel stressed that the participation of the first new EU members at the elections to the European Parliament, a wish expressed by the EU at the Nice summit, is of key importance to the candidate countries. EU accession agreements should be ratified by 2003, he added.
