Weekly Review of Events Involving Slovenia from 13 to 19 October

Ljubljana, 20 October - Slovenia proved it was immune to the global anthrax scare, as over a dozen "suspicious" packages were reported from across Slovenia this week. To date none have proven to contain the deadly anthrax bacteria. The issue of bioterrorism, as well as other security concerns in light of the September 11 events, were discussed by the Slovene National Security Council which concluded that Slovenia does not face a direct threat. However, explosions were heard in Slovenia this week, but these were a part of the largest Slovene military exercise held this year near Postojna. The exercise probably did not do much to reduce environmental pollution, but overall it seems as if the Slovene environment seems to be in fairly good hands, as European Environment Commissioner congratulated Slovenia on the successful implementation of the EU legislation in the environment field.
