Weekly Review of Events Involving Slovenia from 13 to 19 April

Ljubljana, 20 April - The previous week was marked by events related to the two major Slovene foreign policy priorities, membership in the EU and NATO. Among other things, Slovene parliamentary representative in the European Convention on the future of Europe Lojze Peterle was appointed as the representative of the EU candidate countries in the presidency of the Convention. Slovenia was also paid a visit by European Parliament President Pat Cox, who attempted to calm any fears about Slovenia losing its national identity as a member of the Union. As regards NATO, the Slovene defence and foreign ministers appeared on national television in an attempt to explain the pros of membership of the Alliance. Slovene officials also discussed NATO-related topics with British Secretary of Defence Geoffrey Hoon, who paid a two-day visit to Slovenia.
