Gov't Moves Ahead with Professionalization of Army; Mandatory Service to be Abolished in 2004
Ljubljana, 25 April - The serving of the mandatory military term for Slovene men is expected to be abolished as of mid-2004, Defence Minister Anton Grizold revealed after Thursday's government session which discussed proposals to change the system of complementing the professional armed forces with conscripted soldiers. The envisaged changes would see a gradual transformation of the Slovene armed Forces into a professional army with a voluntary reserve force.
