Citizens Should Have Opportunity to Take Historical Decision on NATO, Says Opposition MP

Ljubljana, 22 May - The parliament convened on Wednesday afternoon to debate a proposal to hold an early referendum on Slovenia's NATO membership, which however is opposed by most parliamentary parties and the government. Listing several reasons for holding a referendum before Slovenia receives an invitation to join the Alliance, an MP of the party which put the proposal forward said that one of the main reasons was the fact that citizens would have an opportunity to take this "historical" decision without being under the influence of the invitation.
