Weekly Review of Events Involving Slovenia from 15 to 21 June

Ljubljana, 22 June - While lawmakers doubled the effort this week to adopt as many EU-compatible laws as possible before the parliamentary vacations, Slovene President Milan Kucan travelled to Ireland to urge the Irish to confirm the Nice Treaty at the renewed referendum, and enable candidates to enjoy the same development opportunities that Ireland has enjoyed. Kucan also touched on EU accession at his traditional press conference ahead of National Day, stressing that accession negotiations will have been wrapped up by the time Slovenia celebrates this national holiday the next time. Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek, meanwhile, travelled to Yugoslavia to forge closer ties with the country that is becoming an increasingly important trade partner for Slovenia, while officials negotiating the succession to the former Yugoslavia continued with talks aimed at a just division of the former common country's assets.
