Roma Election Rights in Seven Slovene Municipalities Remain in Doubt
Ljubljana, 15 August - Seven of the twenty Slovene municipalities where Roma communities live have not yet amended their statutes to accommodate the implementation of the community's right to have a seat on the municipality council reserved for their representative, despite the expiration of the first deadline last Monday. Examining the situation, two Slovene dailies say it is unlikely that the seven municipalities will adopt the changes before the expiration of the final deadline on 1 September, while they also point to the stereotypical nature of debates witnessed on the issue in the seven municipal councils.
