NATO Advocates Prevail in a For-And-Against Radio Panel
Ljubljana, 26 September - Improved safety, the possibility of influencing decisions on Europe's security, lower costs for more defence and greater economic advantage were the main arguments of Slovenia's NATO advocates at Thursday's discussion on the national radio. Their opponents cited possible increase of terrorist threats, pressure by the powerful countries, especially the U.S., and higher defence costs at the expense of social services as the main reasons for staying out of the Alliance. However, the opponents were not convincing enough as an after show phone poll revealed that more than 1,000 callers were in favour of joining NATO with meagre 106 callers voting against.
