Ljubljana, 7 October - Schedule of events in the week from 7 to 13 October:

MONDAY, 7 October

VALLETTA - Slovenian President Milan Kucan is to kick off a two-day official visit to Malta. Kucan is to be accompanied by spouse Stefka for what is to be his first official visit to the tiny island nation. Kucan is expected to meet Maltese counterpart Guido de Marco and other top Maltese officials.

BUDAPEST - The chief negotiators with the EU from the leading applicant countries - among them Slovenia - are to hold a regular half-yearly meeting. Slovenia's chief EU negotiator Janez Potocnik is to be in attendance of what is expected to be the last meeting of the "Luxembourg group" negotiators before the scheduled end of EU accession negotiations.

LJUBLJANA - The Speaker of the New South Wales state parliament John Henry Murray is to arrive for a visit. The official from the most populous Australian state is due to be received by Slovenian President Milan Kucan and Parliament Speaker Borut Pahor. Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel is to host a working lunch for Murray.

KRAKOW - Chairman of the Slovenian parliamentary commission for European affairs Lojze Peterle is to take part in the ninth meeting of counterparts from the leading EU applicant countries.

LJUBLJANA - An international conference on increasing competitiveness of businesses is to be launched by Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek and Economics Minister Tea Petrin. The two-day event is entitled "20 Keys".

LJUBLJANA - The Dutch Ambassador to Slovenia Jan Henneman and Assistant Director of the Gov't Centre for European Affairs Rado Genoria are to sign a bilateral accord on the realisation of 2003 projects of bilateral co-operation linked to Slovenian accession to the EU.

LJUBLJANA - The Gov't Corruption Prevention Office is to present the results of a public opinion poll on corruption in the country.

CELJE - A number of unofficial presidential candidates for the upcoming elections are to discuss business policy at a meeting of entrepreneurs. Apart from public finance and takeovers in Slovenia, the EU, NATO, relations with Croatia, regional policies and differences between western and eastern Slovenia are also to be discussed.

TRIESTE - The working group for minorities of the Central European Initiative (CEI) is to meet to discuss the current status and future implementation of the CEI document on minority protection. The session is to be attended by the 12 partnership members, including Slovenia.

TUESDAY, 8 October

LJUBLJANA - U.S. Ambassador to NATO Nicholas Burns is due to visit Slovenia. Burns is to be received by Slovenian Defence Minister Anton Grizold. On Wednesday, Slovenian President Milan Kucan is to meet with the guest.

LJUBLJANA - The central bank, Bank of Slovenia, is to stage a commemoration of eleven years of Slovenian currency, the tolar.

LJUBLJANA - The coalition Pensioners' Party is to hold a press conference to present activities for the upcoming local and presidential elections. The DeSUS-backed presidential hopeful Anton Bebler is to be in attendance.

LJUBLJANA - Independent presidential hopeful Dusan Mihajlovic is to hold a press conference.

WEDNESDAY, 9 October

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is to adopt the annual reports on progress made by EU applicant countries towards membership, as well as the recommendation on which applicants would be ready to wrap up accession negotiations by the end of the year and join the Union in 2004. Slovenia is expected to be among the countries for which a recommendation to wrap up negotiations by the end of the year will be made.

LJUBLJANA - The head of the European Commission delegation in Slovenia Erwan Fouere is to hand the enlargement strategy and progress report for Slovenia to Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek.

THURSDAY, 10 October

LJUBLJANA - The Slovenian parliamentary foreign policy committee is to get acquainted with the European Commission report on the country's progress towards membership of the EU.

LJUBLJANA - The regular weekly government session.

LJUBLJANA - Results of the national reading survey are to be presented at a press conference of the Slovenian Advertising Chamber.

FRIDAY, 11 October

LJUBLJANA - The official start of the election campaign for the November 10 local and presidential elections.ΕΎ

ANKARA - Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel is to pay an official visit to Turkey.

VIENNA - Slovenian President Milan Kucan is to be guest speaker at the forum on the European Union in the midst of globalisation and renationalisation processes. As part of his stay in the Austrian capital, Kucan is expected to meet with Austrian counterpart Thomas Klestil.

PORTOROZ - A conference of financial experts that is to take a look at the Slovenian capital market is to be staged by the Ljubljana Stock Exchange.

SATURDAY, 12 October

KOSTANJEVICA NA KRKI - Slovenian President Milan Kucan is to partake in a ceremony marking 750 years of the first mention of this town.

SUNDAY, 13 October

PORTOROZ - The Golden Drum, the biggest advertising festival in Slovenia, is to kick off with the presentation of past winners.
