First President in Independent Slovenia is Bidding Farewell

Ljubljana, 13 October - The second five-year term of Slovenian President Milan Kucan will expire on 23 December. Unable to run for a third-straight term due to constitutional restrictions, Kucan, who convincingly won the 1992 as well as the 1997 elections in the first round, is expected to withdraw from the political scene when he passes the helm over to the new president - only the second one since Slovenia gained independence in 1991.
