Annual Review of Slovenian Sports
Ljubljana, 7 December - Only a few years ago, a look at the 2002 sporting calendar would have made Slovenian sports aficionados sigh: "So many important events, yet no Slovenian athletes taking part in most of them." This year's reality was therefore almost unreal. Slovenian participation at the Winter Olympic Games is traditional and medals are no longer a surprise, but a Football World Cup and a World Hockey Championships with Slovenian athletes battling it out with the best? The history-making maiden appearance of the Slovenian national football team at the World Cup, the Winter Olympics with a medal, and, to top it off, the excellent track athlete Jolanda Ceplak with gold medals at the European and World Championships, as well as a world record. Not to mention the world record of swimmer Peter Mankoc. These are the Slovenian sporting highlights of 2002. Moreover, we must not forget one of the largest organisational undertakings, the Chess Olympiad at Bled. Adding their bit were numerous other athletes: swimmers, shooters, rowers, canoeists, judoists, gymnasts and others who have returned from the most important international competitions furnished with a gold medal and a new world record.
