The World Veterans Federation (WVF) maintains that the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Europe from Nazism and fascism - the D-day landings by the allies in Normandy - which was the most important step in the liberation of Europe, should be attended by both the victorious and the defeated sides. The French government, the organiser of the commemoration, maintains it is a military event.
