Weekly Review of Events Involving Slovenia from 22 to 28 March

Ljubljana, 29 March - To the surprise of even the most unflagging optimists, Slovenians overwhelmingly backed the country's accession to the EU and NATO at the 23 March referendums. But the politicians coudl not rest on their laurels for long. While they were still receiving congratulations from the EU, NATO and numerous heads of state, news came out that Slovenia would get U.S. funds for its support for the war in Iraq. The news sparked spontaneous protests and politicians rushed to downplay the importance of the White House's decision, but the largely anti-war public has not yet received sufficient explanation about whether Slovenia supports or opposes the war in Iraq.
