New Role for EU Candidates Following the Signing of the Accession Treaty
Ljubljana, 14 April - The status of the ten new EU members which are set to join the Union on 1 May 2004 will change dramatically after the signing of the EU Accession Treaty on 16 April when the acceding countries are to gain observer status in the EU institutions. The nature of the EU will thus change, with first tangible results of the functioning of the enlarged Union expected shortly.
