Review of Events in Slovenia from May 20 to 27
Ljubljana, 27 May - REVIEW/SLOVENIA/WEEKN
The week form May 20 to 27 was marked by sharp parliamentary debates on the moot-point concerning the referendum area for determining the new Koper municipality. After the Constitutional Court had invalidated the Koper referendum area, the parliament decided to defer the referendum in the area to July 31. The assemblies of voters in the area are to be repeated. The goverment discussed the final report by the government commission on the so-called Smolnikar affair. Slovenian diplomatic activity was quite rich, namely Slovenian President Milan Kučan started an official visit to the Principality of Liechtenstein, the Foreign Minister Lojze Peterle participated at the Pact on Stablility Conference in Paris, a Ministry of Defence delegation led by the Minister of Defence Jelko Kacin took part at the annual meeting of the NATO ministers of defence in Brussels and finally a Ministry of Transport delegation led by the minister Igor Umek attended a European Transport Ministers' Conference in Annecy, France.
