Slovenian Press on Interior Ministry Staff Changes
Ljubljana, 15 June - PRESS/SLOVENIA/MINISTER/POLICE/ŠTER
In its editorial Slovenian daily Delo writes about the changes in the Interior Ministry staff, and also draws attention to the tasks that await the new Police Minister Andrej Šter. The daily maintains that Šter "with the staff changes gained coalition's affection but maybe incurred displeasure of the opposition." The daily Republika's editorial, who deals with the same issue, thinks it worrisome that up till now there was not a Minister who would call himself "Minister of continuity", and would prove that with his staff policy. This fact can be understood either as an assertion that in the Interior Ministry there can be found nothing to lean on the policy of continuity, or as an implicit confession of every new Minister that he does not care about the continuity. However, the present Minister has at his hand a few reasons with which to argue his cabinet purge. Nevertheless, the commentator maintains that it should be remembered that the Ministry of Interior Affairs and that of Defense are not such departments in which it would be possible to make the staff changes solely on the base of loyalty and trust. The commentator appeals to the new Minister to bare in mind that perpetual talking about establishing and regaining trust between the police and the public sounds good, but is of no use. The citizens mainly do not trust the police, which could be of some use to both sides - also to Minister Šter if he finds that out in time.
