Weekly Review of Events Involving Slovenia from 12 to 18 June

Ljubljana, 19 June - A week that started with results of European Parliament elections wrapped up with a long-awaited agreement on the EU's constitution. While the EU summit ended as expected, the elections saw a surprise victory for the conservative parties in Slovenia and a relatively poor showing of the ruling parties. This has led right-of-centre politicians to announce that a major political shift is in the making, while the ruling parties stressed that the euro election is merely a "dress rehearsal" for the general election in the autumn. To add insult to injury for the ruling Liberal Democrats, FM Dimitrij Rupel criticised the party for moving too much towards the left and signed his name to a statement announcing the formation of a new forum, "Assembly of the Republic", alongside conservative leaders and intellectuals.
