Ljubljana, 14 August - The appointment of Janez Potocnik as commissioner for science and research in the future European Commission was met with overwhelming approval in Slovenia, one rarely seen in a time when the parties are busy deepening divisions in the run-up to the general election. The news also briefly overshadowed the looming debate on the interpellation, which the government departments consistently label as unfounded. The coalition and opposition may well disagree on the content and justification of the interpellation, but there is widespread consensus outside their ranks that the imminent debate in parliament is little more than a chance for both sides to get some free campaigning time on national TV.
