Slovenia cannot accept more refugees

Ljubljana, 19 November - The latest figures put the number of Croatian refugees in Slovenia at 21,475, with a further 10 thousand or so who have been accommodated at their relatives or families who can no longer afford to bear all the costs of their sojourn. Since it is unrelistic to expect that the refugee pressure from critical regions in Croatia will stop soon, Slovenia must prepare to handle the problem on a longer-term basis. One of the measures would be to set stricter conditions for obtaining the refugee status, although the majority of those who have have found shelter in Slovenia are mothers with children, or minors and old people. Therefore, all the services dealing with the problems of refugees in Slovenia must coordinate activities. The Republic of Slovenia should ask Croatia to honour all its obligations to the refugees in Slovenia (payment of pensions, medical services and similar) and notify all neighbouring countries of the problem and ask their concrete aid.
