PRESS REVIEW FROM SLOVENIA ,LJUBLJANA, November 26, 1991 (STA)
Ljubljana, 26 November - DELO: FOUR MILLION BEGGING HANDS - Even if Europe recognized us tomorrow, we would not be in the land flowing with milk and honey. Our politicians educated at a brief course in democracy, we live in the clouds of verbalist logic of times past. We place too many hopes in a deus ex machina to turn the course of our history and make us other people - the Europeans, with all the blessing and without any disadvantage it might entail. That is the first delusion we are subject to, writes Damjan Slabe. Our second delusion is the belief that the international recognition will essentially change our position as we will join the international political, financial, economic and other trends and institutions. The point is that we already had it all, but it has not brought us anywhere because we were poorly organized as a society. The problem, then, rests with us alone, not with Europe. If we do not realize that in due course and consume all our energy for soliciting the recognition, our prospects are bleak, Slabe emphasizes.
