Kohl promises recognition before Christmas

Trieste, 27 November - Germany's Chancellor Helmut Kohl told Bundestag that Germany will recognize Slovenia and Croatia before Christmas. He added that the government in Bonn will do so regardless of what other EC countries decide. He expressed hope that most EC states will recognize the sovereignty of the Yugoslav republics, "but we shall not pressure anybody to do so", the Chancellor stressed. This recognition should occur during the period between the meeting in Maastricht (December 9. and 10.) and Christmas. Kohl also said that the German Army will not be included in the UN peace keeping units, since in Europe there are some locations, Yugoslavia among them, to which it would be inconceivable to send German soldiers.
