PRESS REVIEW FROM SLOVENIA, DECEMBER 12, 1991

Ljubljana, 12 December - VEČER: Where did the journalists get the letter from? - Yesterday journalists of the majority of the Slovenian mass media obtained a letter of confidential nature, that the President of the Slovenian Government, Mr. Lojze Peterle, supposedly wrote to the German Chancellor Mr. Kohl. In a statement for Večer Mr. Peterle claimed that the said letter did not originate from his cabinet but must have been released by somebody that obtained it from the Government. Mr. Peterle hinted at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a possible source of this indiscretion. At the press conference Mr. Peterle repeated a statement he gave a week ago to the effect that he did not seek help from Germany, adding - as is also clear from the letter in question - that he merely informed Mr. Kohl as to the position and the aspirations of the Slovenian Government regarding the future collaboration. He also revealed that a letter with similar contents was addressed to the President of the European Commission, Mr. Jacques Delors.
