Igor Bavčar on the Peterle - Rupel dispute

Ljubljana, 12 December - The coordinator of the Democratic Party, Mr. Igor Bavčar, presented the views of the Democratic Party on the present dispute between the member of the Democratic Party and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Dimitrij Rupel, and the President of the Christian Democratic Party and the President of the Executive Council, Mr. Lojze Peterle. As for the effectiveness and professional competence of the present Slovenian Government he stated that the Democrats joined the appeals for replacement of the President of the Government, backed by three parties of the DEMOS coalition, already in Summer. The Democratic Party underpins its cooperation with the DEMOS coalition with its stance regarding the diplomatic recognition and the Laws on property. The Democratic Party is presently working on a new draft of the Property Law that is hoped to be condoned by the DEMOS and Parliament alike. Mr. Bavčar doubts that the Parliament could vote on the resignation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, but if this is nevertheless to come about he would himself evaluate his position in the Government. The Democrats do presently not intend to vote for the replacement of the President of the Government, though it was perfectly clear, already following the first appeals for replacements inside the Government this Summer, whom they would like to see replaced and whose competence they deem is inappropriate.
