Ljubljana, 9 February - Although culture has always been a significant element in the life of the Slovenian nation, and in many respects also stimulated the political awareness and the self-esteem of the nation, February 8., Slovene culture day, is this year for the first time a national holiday. The celebrations culminated in the ceremonial bestowal of the Prešern awards on the eve of the holiday. The Prešern awards were bestowed to the composer Uroš Krek and the writer Boris Pahor, and the awards of the Prešern fund were handed to the group of graphic designers Novi Kolektivizem (which refused to accept the award because of the policy of the Minister of Culture Andrej Capuder), the painter Gustav Gnamuš, the composer Janez Gregorc, actor Igor Samobor, writer Marjan Tomšič and movie director Damir Zlatar Fray.
