PRESS REVIEW FROM SLOVENIA
Ljubljana, 25 February - DELO: AMERICAN RECOGNITION NOW? - Last weeks visit of the Foreign Minister of Slovenia Dr. Dimitrij Rupel to Washington has at last demonstrated the preparedness of the USA to recognize the independence of Slovenia. The author of this article, Mitja Meršol, concludes that the final come out has brought Washington closer to realizing the realities of Yugoslavia. The USA do not oppose Slovenia's full fledged cooperation in the ECSC in Helsinki next month. Washington still contends that Slovenia should be dealt with in context with other Yugoslav republics. They are resolute in denying a selective approach to the recognition of the republics. In the case of Yugoslavia the USA have made a number of mistakes. By ignoring and underestimating Slovenia's part in the European mosaic they have initiated tumults which resulted in German dominance in the European arena. Washington is well aware of that and is seeking an opportunity for a clear, face saving, retreat. The "German formula" for the prompt recognition of Slovenia was well set, the author believes. It encouraged Russia and probably also China., and American fears of a premature recognition were unfounded.
