REVIEW OF THE SLOVENIAN PRESS

Ljubljana, 23 March - DELO: A MAN FROM ANOTHER MOVIE - The Liberal Democratic Party has gained a lot with Dr. Drnovšek as its president. Mostly because of his reputation with the Slovenian public, although his high rating among the Slovenian politicians is something of a mystery for a lot of people. However, we should not forget, that Dr. Drnovšek gained more than the party itself. If he hesitated and only observed the events on the Slovenian political scene, he would sooner or later find himself in a political vacuum and oblivion. But instead he gained the backing of the strongest parliamentary party, which should help him realize his political ambitions. His election as head of the Liberal Democratic Party means a certain break, necessary for the party, which would otherwise because of the internal struggles and battles for dominance be divided into many factions, or worse, even disintegrate without it, writes Veso Stojanov. He adds, that it is difficult to foresee, how Dr. Drnovšek will succeed in preserving the sudden present unity of the party. His actions outside the party will play a more important part in preserving its solidity than his actions within. His statements, that he would not have any objections to including the Christian Democrats in the coalition and his confidential talks with Premier Peterle at the reception after the congress, caused a certain amount of hesitation among many of the Liberal Democratic Party members. The atmosphere at the reception reflected this state of affairs, and was spoilt for some representatives of the party because of the Drnovšek - Peterle "private coalition".
