Agriculture Minister Aleksandra Pivec surprisingly defeated Defence Minister Karl Erjavec in a bitterly contested battle for the presidency of the coalition Pensioners' Party (DeSUS). Pivec won 145 votes at Saturday's congress to Erjavec's 80 to end his 15-year tenure at the helm of the party.

Defence Minister Karl Erjavec has announced his resignation from government after Agriculture Minister Aleksandra Pivec unseated him as president of the Pensioners' Party (DeSUS). He plans to remain a member of DeSUS, he said after Saturday's party election.
