Tasks of Agricultural Statistics in Transition Countries

Agriculture in the countries undergoing transition to market economies has faced difficult problems in the period following 1990. While agricultural production and its quality are expected to grow, it has to perform the tasks of agriculture identical to those in developed countries as well. New tasks concern maintaining of the landscape and preservation of population. Successful agricultural policy in transition countries must be based on quality and internationally comparable data, said Slovene Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Jože Osterc, opening a four-day workshop on agricultural statistics for the countries of Central and East Europe.
