Around 1,000 Attend Cannabis Legalisation Gathering
Ljubljana, 22 April - Around 1,000 supporters of the legalisation of cannabis gathered in Ljubljana's Congress Square for the annual Marijuana March on Wednesday. A declaration was read and a petition started with the aim of ending prohibition.
Klemen Balanč of the Ljubljana University Student Organisation, which organised the meeting, said that several solutions were possible but that it was up to politicians to find common ground.
The students are in favour of across-the-board legalisation, with Balanč arguing that users needed to be destigmatised and decriminalised and controls introduced for the quality of the drug to make it safer.
The organisation has not explicitly endorsed any of the two legalisation campaigns launched on Tuesday by the coalition SocDems and opposition United Left (ZL), but "we like it that politics finally recognised the problem and decided to solve it".
The gathering, which was also attended by some of the MPs of the two parties, saw the reading of a declaration demanding legalisation and it was also possible to sign a petition to this effect.
