Russian Chapel a memorial to soldiers, symbol of Russo-Slovenian ties

Vršič, 30 July - The Russian Chapel below the Vršič mountain pass was built in 1916 by surviving Russian prisoners-of-war in memory of their comrades who died in a snow avalanche while building the mountain road. But in the recent decades it has also become the most visible symbol of Russian-Slovenian friendship and a pilgrimage site for thousands each July.
